Mathematical Research Data

This is a survey on the production and use of mathematical research data, and the challenges involved.

If you only have a minute, please answer just the questions on this page and click ‘Submit’.

If you have more time, we would be very thankful if you could answer all the questions in this questionnaire. It takes about five to ten minutes.

Participation in the survey is voluntary. Participation is anonymous. We do not store IP addresses.
We plan to publish the data collected from this survey (excluding the "About You" section and any free-text responses) in an open repository.

This survey is being conducted on behalf of the Mathematical Research Data Initiatie (MaRDI). If you have any questions, please contact Tabea Bacher at bacher@mis.mpg.de or +49 341 9959643.

This survey is anonymous.

The record of your survey responses does not contain any identifying information about you, unless a specific survey question explicitly asked for it.

If you used an identifying access code to access this survey, please rest assured that this code will not be stored together with your responses. It is managed in a separate database and will only be updated to indicate whether you did (or did not) complete this survey. There is no way of matching identification access codes with survey responses.

Which country is your current affiliation based in?
What is your institutional affiliation?
Which fields are you working in? (MSC 2020 classification)

About Your Research Data

Research data in this survey refers to data that is generated, developed, or analysed during scientific activities.

What kinds of research data do you typically generate in your research?

How do you obtain your research data?

Do you use version control for your code or data?
Where do you  store your current/active research data?
Which metadata (documentation of your data) do you collect for your research data? Choose all that apply.
What is your preferred platform for publishing your research data including research software and code?
Which of these data types cause you the most challenges in terms of management, sharing, or reuse?

FAIRness of Your Data

When you consider your research data as a whole, how would you classify it based on the FAIR principles?
Not at all A little Somewhat Rather good Completely No answer
Findable (e.g. well-named, searchable, indexed)
Accessible (e.g. stored in accessible repositories, metadata available)
Interoperable (e.g. standard formats)
Reusable (e.g. documented, licensed)
What are the main barriers that prevent you from making your research data more FAIR?

Research Data in Your Field

Are there formal guidelines, procedures or workflows that specify your handling of data?

Are there any privacy or confidentiality issues associated with research data in your field?
Do the journals in which you publish have data-sharing/accessibility requirements?

About Research Data By Others

Do you reuse published research data including research software obtained from data repositories?
Please let us know how you reuse the data
What challenges do you face using data by others?

Research Data Management Plans

Have you ever created a Research Data Management Plan (DMP) or a Software Management Plan (SMP)?

In which context have you created a DMP/SMP?

Are there tools or templates you use?
Is research data management coordinated within your team?
How important do you consider DMPs/SMPs for good scientific practice?
How useful do you find DMPs/SMPs for your day-to-day research?
What would make DMPs and SMPs more useful for your day-to-day research?
